1. Smeg BCC02

Designed by Milan-based firm Deep Design, this sleek, compact and striking machine combines the unique retro style of the brand with modern technology. The machine is able to handle all the stages of the coffee-making process from grinding beans to tamping into a puck and texturing milk before dispensed the correct amount.

The machine also sports an elegant brushed aluminium front and is available in a variety of black, red or taupe, so it's easy to integrate into the majority of kitchen designs. The machine is not free of flaws however. Many reviewers felt that it was quite expensive for a cup-to- bean maker (and isn't equipped with the milk pitcher).

There were numerous glowing reviews about the machine's ease of use as well as the quality of its coffee. The digital display is intuitive and provides step-by-step guidance and feedback throughout the entire making process, allowing you to improve your coffee every time. The machine can even instruct you to adjust the size of the grind, if that's not what you prefer. It's almost like having a personal barista at home (minus Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility and Elon Musk's rocket-building skills).

This model is perfect for those who prefer milky drinks. The steam wand is adjustable upwards and downwards to fit most drinking vessels, except Viking drinking horns. We were also impressed by the speed and efficiency with which the frothing was done. It makes an amazing, full-flavoured espresso with a great crema.

The BCC02 is a fantastic all-rounder, quiet and efficient and provides excellent value for money at its current price of PS499. Its only real drawback is the fact that it doesn't offer the same level of customisation like some of the other bean to cup models we've tried. It comes with a 15 bar pump rather than the more common 19 bar that aren't as efficient for making high-quality espressos. But other than that it's a fantastic machine to make coffee for those who prefer their coffee strong and dark.
